'Confines of COVID-19' reflection

This series of collages explores our relationship with the outdoors during quarantine and I think that I have successfully shown this. I have included lots of imagery of nature and have placed wire on top to represent the confinement within our houses during quarantine and the lack of freedom we have had to venture outside. To link to the project theme of 'Noise' I have included road maps in my collages as roads, and transport in general, generate a lot of noise, contrasting to that of the calming, quiet sounds of nature. Roads also link to the pandemic and the restricted travel we face. The intertwining roads, wire, string and tape link to the idea of enclosure and restriction, but also represent connections - connections between us and the outdoors; connections between people and the spread of COVID-19 and connections between different places and our shared experience globally.

Like the other series of collages, I enjoyed the process of making these because I was just making it up as I went along and felt no pressure to make them perfect. I came into this task not knowing what I was trying to depict or explore, however, when I began to incorporate wire into the colleges, my ideas suddenly all came together and I had found a clear direction. It was fun using the collages as a canvas for my thought processes.

I think that to further develop this series of collages, I could have added paint to the second two collages, exploring its fluidity which could be a contrast to the overriding theme of restricted movement. I also think I could have been more experimental with material and texture to add more depth to the collages and fill up some of the empty, blank spaces. Incorporating sound into the collages could also be something to consider, adding another layer to the collages and making the viewing experience more immersive. This could be a recording of bird song or the sound of cars / lack of.
